El Niño Incoming: PAGASA Update 2026

At a Glance

  • PAGASA says the Philippines is currently under ENSO-neutral conditions.
  • Most climate models suggest El Niño is likely to emerge in the June – August 2026 season.
  • If it develops, El Niño is likely to persist until early 2027.
  • For the Philippines, El Niño can mean below-normal rainfall, dry spells, and drought in some areas.
  • Some western parts of the country may still experience above-normal rainfall during Habagat.
  • Globally, El Niño is associated with fewer Atlantic storms and more activity in the Pacific.

Recent international weather reports have focused on how a possible El Niño could affect rainfall patterns and hurricane activity in other parts of the world.

El Niño at a Global Scale

Globally, El Niño is often associated with suppressed Atlantic hurricane development and increased tropical storm activity in the Pacific. That is why many international reports focus on hurricanes. But for the Philippines, the more immediate concern is often not the Atlantic storm count. It is the local risk of hotter conditions, reduced rainfall in some areas, and more pressure on homes and utilities. Based on PAGASA’s latest monitoring, the Philippines is still under ENSO-neutral conditions, but El Niño is considered likely to emerge in mid-2026 and may last into early 2027.

What El Niño Could Mean for the Philippines

In the Philippines, El Niño is commonly linked to below-normal rainfall, dry spells, and drought conditions in some areas. PAGASA also notes that this does not affect every part of the country the same way, since some western sections may still experience above-normal rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

That said, an El Niño occurrence can and will directly affect daily comfort, household routines, water supply, and indoor living conditions, especially during prolonged hot and dry periods.

Staying Cool During the Hot Weather

For many households, the biggest concern is simple: how to stay cool during El Niño in the Philippines. When hotter days become more frequent, homes can trap heat more easily, especially in dense urban areas with limited ventilation. This can make bedrooms, living rooms, and work-from-home spaces feel hotter for longer.

Many Filipinos will rely more heavily on electric fans, split-type air conditioners, and window-type air conditioners to stay comfortable. But when cooling appliances are used more often, they also experience more strain. Units that are already dirty, weak, or overdue for maintenance may cool less effectively and use more electricity.
