Now that summer is easing out in the Philippines, the weather has entered that familiar in-between phase: hot one moment, rainy the next, and sticky almost all day. With El Niño conditions still affecting the region, many homes are relying on their air conditioners not just for cooling, but for relief from heavy, humid air.
But here’s the thing: humidity can make your AC work harder than usual.
An air conditioner does two jobs. First, it lowers the room temperature. Second, it removes moisture from the air as water condenses on the evaporator coil. When the air is extra humid, your AC spends more effort pulling out moisture before the room starts to feel truly cool. That is why you can set the temperature low and still feel sticky.
High humidity can also make the unit run longer. Longer run times may mean higher electricity consumption, more strain on the compressor, and faster buildup of moisture inside the system. If the drain line gets clogged or the filter is dirty, that extra moisture can lead to dripping, weak airflow, or a musty smell.
This is also why turning the temperature way down is not always the best solution. It may cool the room, but it does not always remove humidity efficiently. In some cases, the room can feel cold but damp.
To help your AC handle humid weather better, clean the filters regularly, keep doors and windows closed while cooling, and use dry mode when the room feels sticky but not extremely hot. You can also pair your AC with a fan to improve air circulation, or use a separate dehumidifier in very damp rooms.
Humidity is part of life in the Philippines, but with the right habits, your air conditioner can cool more efficiently, feel more comfortable, and last longer.
